Verismo Opera Presents Richard Wagner's Die Walküre

Performances November 16, 17, 23 and 24, 2013

Vallejo, CA - Verismo Opera presents four performances of Richard Wagner's Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) on November 16 and 23 at 6 PM and November 17 and 24 at 1 PM at the Bay Terrace Theater in Vallejo.  Complete and fully staged with orchestra, Die Walküre is part 2 of the cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), featuring the unforgettable "Ride of The Valkyries", "Wotan's Farewell", and the Magic Fire Music.  This production is supported by the Mira Theater Guild and underwritten by Valhalla Productions.

Seasoned Wagner afficionados, general opera goers and newcomers alike will enjoy this thoughtful and earthy production, directed by Richard Bogart and led by music director Michael Shahani. Cast with superb singers from the Bay area and beyond, the roster of singers features Megan Cullen and Leslie Schipa as Brünnhilde, Richard Goodman and Richard Mix as Wotan, N'Kenge and Jennifer Rogers as Sieglinde, Delmar McComb and Mark Lin as Siegmund, Cary Ann Rosko  as Fricka, and Ben Brady as Hunding. The production team includes Cristina Arriola, set design; Callie Floor, costumes and Paul Trombley, lighting.

The Story:
Wotan has fathered a mortal son, Siegmund, in order to recover the ring. Siegmund stumbles upon the home of Sieglinde, his unrecognized twin sister. Although Sieglinde is the wife of Siegmund's sworn enemy, the two are mutually attracted and consummate their incestuous relationship. Wotan's outraged wife Fricka, protector of marriage vows, demands that Wotan order his daughter, the warrior-maiden Brünnhilde, not to protect Siegmund, but to let him die in battle against Sieglinde's husband. Disobeying Wotan, Brünnhilde tries in vain to prevent Siegmund's death but rescues the pregnant Sieglinde. To punish Brünnhilde's disobedience, Wotan puts her into a deep sleep, surrounded by fire, to await a mortal husband.
