Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead is Shakespeares Hamlet turned on its head, with elements of Becketts absurdist Waiting for Godot thrown in the mix. Tom Stoppard, one of Americas leading contemporary playwrights, takes two of Shakespeares minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and centers a comedy on the duo trying to find purpose in their banal lives. Sinister traveling players and a confusingly androgynous Alfred approach the two and make coy allusions about fate. The doomed protagonists Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wander amongst the rubble, wondering if their only exit is death.
