Modern Media Censorship Lecture 6
Dr. Michael Schwartz, Professor of Sociology and Global Studies at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, discusses the casualty count in Iraq and compares the various methods used so far to determine the number of deaths. He discusses why U.S. military strategy has guaranteed high levels of death and destruction, and how the lack of independent reporting has made drastic underestimates of Iraqi casualties believable to the U.S. public. Dr. Schwartz has written extensively on popular protest and insurgency, and on US business and government dynamics. His work on Iraq has appeared in Asia Times, MotherJones.com, TomDispatch, Against the Current, Contexts, and Z magazine. His books include Radical Politics and Social Structure, The Power Structure of American Business (with Beth Mintz), and Social Policy and the Conservative Agenda (edited, with Clarence Lo).
Wes Enzinna, freelance reporter and photojournalist will focus on the current resurgence of US involvement in El Salvador and the impact it is having on Salvadoran policies and internal politics. Mr. Enzinna will discuss the new US-sponsored global police training center based on the much-maligned School of the Americas which operated throughout the 1980s and 90s along with the new Salvadoran anti-terrorism bill modeled after the USA Patriot Act. Wes Enzinna lived and worked as an independent journalist in Cochabamba, Bolivia, was a researcher at the Andean Information Network and interned at the Nation Institute focusing on Latin America. Currently a graduate student in Latin American Studies at UC Berkeley, Wes Enzinna is the winner of NACLAs 2007 Samuel Chavkin Investigative Journalism award. Both a journalist and photojournalist, Mr. Enzinnas work has appeared in the Nation, In These Times, and Counterpunch.
