Jazz at the Lions Club: FAQ & Covid Protocol
What and when? Live jazz and improvised music every (remaining) Tuesday in September. 6:30pm start. In conjunction with the Lions weekly dinners, which start at 4:30pm. Music kicks off as dinner crowds wind down. Co-presented by Portland Conservatory of Musics Dimensions in Jazz program and the Lions.
Where? Under the lights and stars, on the unparalleled oceanside lawn of the Peaks Island Lions Club.
Who? September 15th, its Bill Cooley & the Greenwood Players. Bill is a 4+ decade-long resident of Peaks and the venerable vibraphonist, marimba man, guitar-slinger, songsmith, and singer of the legendary Cool Breeze Band. Hell be joined by Peaks residents, Gary Fox on saxophones and Peter McLaughlin on drums, and special guest, Nat Baldwin on upright bass.
September 22nd, its solo pianist, composer, beatmaker, educator, and community pilar, Kafari also known as the decade-long Portland resident, Ahmad Hassan Muhammad alongside first lady of Maine soul and r&b, singer and bandleader Kenya Hall.
September 29th, its the RJ Miller Band. RJ is a Maine native and Brunswick resident, who cut his teeth in the NYC and Barcelona jazz scenes, performing alongside a whos who of contemporary music such as Bill McHenry, Rebecca Martin, Ben Monder, and members of The Bad Plus, Ethan Iverson and Reid Anderson.
How much? There will be a suggested donation of $10-15 for the musicians, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. All food proceeds and a portion of concert donations will benefit the Lions Club scholarship program.
Masks? Masks are required for entry. Full stop! You may remove your mask while seated, but if you move about the Lions Club property, you must be masked.
Seating? Seating is seat-yourself on the wide open Lions Club lawn, as well as at the many picnic tables, arranged at a safe distance. Please feel free to bring a blanket or a lawn chair, but please maintain social distancing!
Bathrooms? Bathrooms are available inside the Lions Club theatre. Only one person inside each bathroom at a time, please.
Capacity? The Maine state capacity for outdoor events is currently set at 100 people. We will be keeping our numbers under that.
Rain? Well, we certainly hope not. But this is an outdoor event, so if the forecast is not agreeable, we will postpone.
