Virtual Tour - The Press Building Tour Re-Use and Re-brand The Second Life of a Processing Facility
The attendees will learn the history of the building used as LA Times newsroom, printing press, and distribution facility. The site and the three-story building are going through a major renovation to be repurposed as a 360,000 square foot creative office space and approximately 50,000 square foot market hall and outdoor gathering spaces.

Learning Objectives:

Considerations regarding the amount of interventions as to not trigger seismic upgrades will be discussed. Project development and documentation: The project integrates the new and repurposed building with the existing structural with new and compatible building materials to maintain the industrial character of the original press building.

Best practices for phasing and design packages will be discussed.
The projects preliminary design was separated into three phases for best project management and to integrate the food hall into the final building design

Attendees will understand how the design team planned for flexibility within the tenant spaces. The project combines the interior and exterior spaces to encourage interaction along with the occupants and users of the site.

By using an existing building structure and footprint that was formerly an industrial plant, the design team will showcase how they kept the character of the original structure while converting it to a new use and program.

Presenters:

Patricia Rhee, FAIA, DBIA, is a Partner at Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects, where she has practiced for 20 years and was recently elevated to AIAs College of Fellows. Patricia received her masters degree in Architecture from Harvard's Graduate School of Design and her bachelors degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the recipient of the 2017 Culver City Women in Business Council Visionary Award and was also a Founding Co-Chair of the AIA Los Angeles Women in Architecture committee. In 2015, her firm received the 2015 National AIA Firm Award, one of the industrys highest honors. Patricia has served as Partner in Charge and Lead Designer for several of the firms most notable projects including the Culver Steps, John M. Roll Federal Courthouse and The Press Adaptive Re-Use.

Jonathan Hastanan is a Managing Director of Acquisitions and Development at SteelWave, where he is responsible for acquisition, financing, asset management, marketing, leasing and property management for Orange County and San Diego. Jonathan has over 15 years of commercial real estate experience throughout the Western U.S. region.  Prior to joining SteelWave, Jonathans real estate experience was in equity and debt investing. He previously worked at Ares Management, Pearlmark Real Estate Partners, and began his career with Prudential Mortgage Capital Company.


Matt Ford has been in the construction industry for 24 years. He was a principal of Shade House Development and then later for Ford Design LLC. for the last 15 years. Both of these companies were design-build firms where Matt acted as the lead designer as well as provided oversight management on all projects. Several of these projects were published in the U.S. as well as internationally. For the last four years, Matt has worked with SteelWave as head of design, first as a consultant and then as employees.
