Making it to the Next Level in Baseball

MARK LORETTA:
Following four years as the starting Northwestern Wildcat shortstop and occasional appearances as a relief pitcher, Loretta was named an All-America and the Big Ten Player of the Year his senior season (1993). He was also named third-team All-Big Ten in 1991 and 1992. Loretta is ranked second on NU's career hits list with 239 and sixth in total bases with 336. Loretta also led the team to two 15-win Big Ten seasons when the Wildcats finished third at 15-12-1 in 1991 and fifth with a 15-13 record in 1993. Since then, Loretta has played professionally, first for the Milwaukee Brewers (1995-2002), Houston Astros (2002 and 2007), San Diego Padres (2003-05) and Boston Red Sox (2006).

CHRIS YOUNG:
Chris Young is a right-handed pitcher, who is currently playing for the Washington Nationals organization. He made his major league debut on August 24, 2004, for the Texas Rangers and within two seasons, was traded to the San Diego Padres. Young played four seasons with the San Diego Padres and two seasons with the New York Mets.  After a high school career as an athlete and scholar, Young excelled in both baseball and basketball for Princeton University and became the Ivy League's first male two-sport Rookie of the Year. He was elected to the 2007 MLB All-Star Game.

MARK KOTSAY:
Mark Kotsay was most recently an outfielder with the San Diego Padres. He previously played for the Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Milwaukee Brewers. A native of Whittier, California, Kotsay was selected by the Florida Marlins as the 9th pick of the Amateur Draft in 1996 out of Cal State Fullerton. In 1995, Kotsay won the Golden Spikes Award and was the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series, as CS-Fullerton won its third Series championship. In addition to being an outfielder, Kotsay was a closer in college; he pitched the final five outs to clinch his team's CWS title.
