Ute Lemper at the Jazz Cafe at Music Hall
"The world of cabaret can be divided into two distinct categories: Ute Lemper and everyone else," - The Chicago Tribune German-born cabaret icon, Ute Lemper takes the audience on a journey through Berlin (Brecht, Weill), to the poetic universe of the French chansons (Brel, Piaf, Ferre), and on to the Argentinean world of Tango (Astor Piazzolla), all while telling stories of love lost, survival, and passion.
Internationally-renowned, she has been universally praised for her interpretations of Berlin Cabaret Songs, the works of Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht and the French Chanson Book, as well as for her own compositions and for jazz-influenced collaborations and works. With an alluring, compelling stage personality, she is one of the most accomplished and recognized performers in the cabaret world today.
Ms. Lemper's career has been vast and varied. On the musical stage she starred in the original Vienna production of Cats, played Peter in Peter Pan (Berlin) and Sally Bowles in Jerome Savary's Cabaret (Paris) for which she received the Moliere Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She created the role of Velma Kelly in the West End production of Chicago, one for which she was honored with the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. In the field of dance, a ballet, La Mort Subite, was created for her by Maurice Bejart in Paris. She collaborated with the influential Pina Bausch and her Tanztheater on Bausch's Weill Revue.
