Opera. Broadway. Dance. Dis/ability. Opera Mariposa is pulling out all the stops for our 2020 Benefit + Awareness Show, presenting a transformative night of musical theatre and opera that explores the dis/ability experience while showcasing a talented cast of underrepresented artists. Enjoy performances by Metropolitan Opera and Ovation Award-winners, artists with and without disabilities, and diverse performers from all walks of life who are raising their voices for a wonderful cause. What's a Benefit + Awareness Show? Opera Mariposa is led by individuals with disabilities, and disability representation and advocacy are an important part of what we do. Every year since our company's inception, we've partnered with a Canadian medical charity to present a show that raises awareness for their cause - and for the disability community - through music. These Benefit + Awareness Shows were created and spearheaded by artistic director Jacqueline Ko, who has lived with the chronic neuroimmune disease Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) since age six, and who produced her first Benefit + Awareness Show for ME at age seventeen.
This year, were excited to be receiving the support of Creative BC and the City of Vancouver. Their support has allowed us to expand our 2020 Benefit + Awareness Show into a platform for the diverse voices of the Vancouver artistic community. We're excited to help provide more opportunities for emerging and underrepresented performers, while partnering with the ME|FM Society of BC to support their vital work.
What's the ME|FM Society of BC? The ME|FM Society of BC is a registered Canadian charity working to support and advocate for people living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and/or Fibromyalgia (FM) throughout British Columbia. Their purpose is to educate and increase awareness of ME and FM within the health care community, government and public; to provide information and support for patients and their families; and to promote state-of-the-art medical research, testing, diagnosis and treatments. They have helped thousands of people through BC and beyond to understand their illnesses, access resources, and obtain medical help to improve their quality of life. They are also dedicated to building an inclusive organisation that will reasonably accommodate and create opportunities for the participation of ME and FM patients, as well as their carers and families, at all levels of their organisation.
