CANCELLED-Profs & Pints: Understanding Ukraine
Profs and Pints presents: Understanding Ukraine, a look at the history and politics of a distant nation at the center of an American scandal, with Matthew Rojansky, director of the Woodrow Wilson Center's Kennan Institute and adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins SAIS.

Ukraine has been in US headlines practically every day.  But what exactly is this distant place that has become central to discussions an American president, and perhaps to the fate of American democracy writ large?  Beyond the impeachment proceedings, why should Americans even care what happens in Ukraine, and why do Russians appear to care so much?  What did the Ukrainian people themselves think about this exceptional moment in American politics, and what do they want for their own future?

Come learn what you need to know about a nation with importance to the United States that stretches well beyond the confines of the impeachment debate. We'll start by getting to know Ukraine's rich and deep history, which has been forged in the fires of wars, tragedies and revolutions, but also raises hopes for reform and progress. That history weighs heavily not just on the over 40 million people living in Ukraine, but on the over 140 million Russians living right next door, and on millions of Russians and Ukrainians in the worldwide diaspora, including those right here in the United States.

What happens in Ukraine is about much more than just Ukraine.  The country is famous for oligarchs who stole vast fortunes from their own people, and exploited shadowy links with Russia, Europe and even the United States to become power brokers much more influential than any elected politician. That dark story has brought down President Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, threatened Trump's own presidency, and may threaten the candidacy of ex-Vice President Joe Biden.

Do Ukrainians realize what is at stake?  The country's energetic and popular young comedian-turned-president, Volodymyr Zelensky, seems to recognize the sensitivity and the stakes of this moment.  Indeed, this is the performance of his life, and performing alongside Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin it will be no easy role.
