Do you always end up with a dull sketch because the colors get muddy? Do you want to learn how to use your watercolor palette to create a great sketch? Lets look at strategies for putting excitement, interest and WOW into your sketches by using color to support and expand the story.
We will discuss strategies of color that the instructor will demonstrate. Students will practice these strategies with simple exercises before sketching and painting a final piece to pull it all together.
Learning goals: * Sketch boldly with color * Decide what colors will make a certain statement * Use watercolors to bring excitement and interest to your sketch

Required:
* Waterproof pen with medium-sized nib (examples: Pigma Micron size 08 or Staedtler Lumocolor size F) * Medium-size watercolor brushes ( oval or flat) * Watercolor paper, 9x12 or 11x17 * Pencil (no eraser, please) * Watercolor palette with a range of colors * 11x17 foam core board and blue tape (to mount paper) * Cup, water bottle and a few sheets of paper towels Optional: * Stool or portable chair
David Chamness is a licensed architect, an artist and an urban sketcher. He studied at the University of Washington and received his Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan in 1989. He has been sketching and watercolor painting for the last 30-plus years on location around the Pacific Northwest and on his travels.
