Water-soluble colored pencils are a versatile, portable medium, which makes them ideal for sketching on location. Lightweight and easy to handle even while standing, these pencils are both a drawing tool and a medium of vivid, textured color. Fully compatible with ink, markers, watercolors and other media, they can complement whatever you already use. Through demos and an illustrated handout, students will learn at least five techniques that they can use easily in the field. After practicing the techniques through exercises, students will apply the techniques by making at least one urban sketch. Instructor will offer one-on-one feedback and suggestions during the exercises and sketches. Students will share their sketches with the group during the throwdown, which is a traditional, supportive part of the urban sketching culture.
Learning goals: * An understanding of the unique qualities of watercolor pencils as both a drawing and coloring tool. * Time to learn and practice at least five techniques using watercolor pencils. * Practice in using the techniques to make at least one sketch on location.
Supply list:
Required:
* Set of 12 water-soluble colored pencils OR the following colors purchased individually: red, yellow, blue, medium green, dark gray (see recommendations below on brands) * 1 waterbrush, medium or large (My favorite brand is Kuretake, also marketed as Niji; available locally at Daniel Smith and Blick. The link above goes to JetPens so you can see what it looks like, but it is not necessarily the best price.) * Sketchbook (no smaller than 8 x 5) or loose sheets intended for wet media. 140 lb. cold-press watercolor paper recommended. *See notes below. (My favorites: Stillman & Birn Beta sketchbook, 140 lb. Canson XL watercolor paper pad) * Small water spritzer (Examples: travel-size perfume atomizer or hand sanitizer. Empty out the original product and refill with water.) * Pencil sharpener that fits your pencils (pencil diameters vary) or knife (if you are already adept at knife-sharpening) * Paper towel or napkin
Provided by instructor: Water-media-appropriate paper for exercises. *If you dont have a sketchbook containing watercolor paper, bring your usual sketchbook and sketch on the exercise paper or try watercolor pencils in your usual book. Watercolor pencils can be surprisingly friendly to many papers (though you may not be able to do water-heavy techniques if the paper is extremely thin).
Watercolor pencil suggestions:
Watercolor pencils come in a wide range of quality and price -- everything from pennies to $4.50 each. The higher the quality of the pigment in your pencils, the easier it will be to learn the techniques and achieve better results. It is far better to have 5 or 6 colors of high-quality pencils than 120 colors of inferior ones. Listed below are recommended brands. The first one listed is my favorite, but it is very pricey. If you are reluctant to invest in such products, please dont. Bring what you already have, or purchase what is a reasonable price for you. (I encourage students to share with each other to try different brands.) All except Prismacolor are available open stock at Blick.com (prices for individual pencils indicated below), and most are also available open stock at Daniel Smith.
* Caran dAche Museum Aquarelle ($4.29) * Caran dAche Supracolor ($2.69) * Prismacolor Watercolor (old, US-made ones from the 90s are better than contemporary) * Derwent Inktense ($2.09) * Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer ($1.86) Optional: * Soft water-soluble graphite pencil (grade 6B or darker), if youd like to try a similar approach in monochrome (my favorite is Viarco ArtGraf) * Portable stool * Clipboard if you are using loose sheets
A writer by trade, Tina Koyama did not discover the joy of drawing until she was 52 years old. She has been drawing from life nearly every day since then. The Seattle native enjoys sketching from the sidewalk when weather permits and from inside her car when it does not. Wherever she goes, she finds joy in discovering compelling stories in mundane scenes and bringing them to life.
