New sketchers have so many things to learn - perspective, color mixing, people, proportions! We dont always put composition at the top of the list, but a strong design is every bit as important as accurate proportions.
We know a good composition when we see one, but figuring out how to achieve it can be bewildering because, unlike other aspects of drawing, there arent consistent rules. In this workshop, we will explore a few of my go-to compositional strategies. We will look at examples and practice merging shapes, using edges, contrast and asymmetric balance to create a picture that draws the viewer in. This workshop is appropriate for sketchers of all levels who want to learn more about composition.
Learning goals:
Students will learn to think about intentionally using composition to enhance their drawing, tell their story and connect with the viewer.
Supply list:
Required:
* The focus of this class is not on any particular drawing media, so anything portable and easy to use is appropriate. Dry media is suggested. Students should be familiar with whatever drawing tools they bring. Materials should be appropriate for use in a public space. * A sketchbook or 10-12 sheets of loose sketching paper and a clip/drawing board * Any drawing tools you commonly use with your chosen materials: eraser, sharpener, waterbrush, etc. * Students will receive an illustrated handout explaining the core concepts of the workshop.
