Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, one of the first westerners to ordain in Tibetan Buddhism, spent 12 years in a cave high in the Himalayas, contemplating the essence of these teachings. Dharma Friendship Foundation is excited and honored to offer this rare opportunity to listen and learn from one of the great Buddhist masters of our time.

Biography: In 1964, Tenzin Palmo, then Diane Perry, met His Eminence the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche, a great Drukpa Kagyu lama and after requesting ordination, became one of the first Westerners to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monastic.

In 1976, she moved to a cave high in the Himalayan mountains and practiced for 12 years in seclusion, enduring blizzards, sleeping little, and never lying down, remaining always in an upright posture in a traditional meditation box. Her experiences were chronicled in Vicki Mackenzie's biography of her, entitled "Cave in the Snow".

Emerging from her retreat, at the request of her teacher, she began to work on creating a nunnery to enable women from the Himalayan region to devote their lives to spiritual cultivation, a path traditionally open only to men. Dongu Gyatsal Ling (Garden of the Authentic Lineage) opened with the first students in 2000 and today has over 100 nuns living, studying, and practicing on the path to enlightenment.

In February 2008 Tenzin Palmo was given the rare title of Jestunma, which means Venerable Master, by His Holiness the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa.  Tenzin Palmo spends most of the year at Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery and occasionally tours to give teachings and raise funds for the ongoing needs of the DGL nuns and Nunnery.  For more information, please visit the DGLI website: https://dgli.org/
