Whenever I visit local coffee shops for my weekly sip 'n sketch sessions, I try to savor every moment while I enjoy my latte. Even though I like to sit back, relax and take in the scene that inspires me, I don't always have a lot of time to sketch. Therefore, it is important to be able to capture the essence of the space quickly, without worrying about accuracy and getting bogged down by the details.
In this workshop, we will hone the skills needed to capture the essentials by incorporating fast, confident lines and reducing the scene to its basic elements -- shapes, layers and lines. We will do exercises to become comfortable in creating bold and confident lines, discern basic shapes in a scene, and compose the final sketch. Participants may choose to use pen, marker or pencil to create black and white line drawings. We will also touch on the basics of composition.
This workshop is geared towards intermediate sketchers who have experience sketching on-site and would like to learn another method to capture a scene. A basic knowledge of perspective is advantageous.
Learning goals:
1. Draw bold and confident lines (demo/exercise).
2. Reduce a scene to its basic elements, shapes and lines (demo/exercise).
3. Use basic shapes to build perspective.
4. Use layering method to compose a scene: background middle ground foreground
5. Apply basic rules of composition.
5. Determine if a sketch has captured the essence of the scene.
Supply list:
Your favorite sketchbook and a pen, marker or pencil to create black and white line drawings.
