Notans or gray value drawings are a great way to establish depth, a focal point and a map use framing devices and other visual vocabulary to tell a story. Urban sketching is about telling a story, so the two dovetail beautifully. Very often urban sketchers are overwhelmed by a scene: What to put in, what to leave out, and have they told the entire story they wanted to? This style of framing allows sketchers to set a scene and then illustrate the details that are important instead of focusing on one idea.
