Who hasn't set off on a trip or headed out to an event, anticipating the fun of discovering and sketching in a new location, only to return with blank pages, or just a few disappointing scribbles? A busy itinerary and the challenge of traveling with family or friends can leave a sketcher with little time to draw!
Drawing small, with multiple sketches on a page, is my favorite strategy when time is short. Designing the page like a comic book enhances the narrative quality, and it also takes the pressure off for each drawing to be perfect.
This workshop is designed to teach intermediate students how to put together a useful, well-curated travel kit and explore a flexible new approach to travel sketching. It will make sure you return from your next trip - whether it is overseas or around the block - with a collection of sketches that tell the story of where you have been.
Learning goals: * Choose, from your own drawing tools three to six core tools that work well together, are portable, easy to use and which they feel confident using. An example might be a favorite pen, a small palette of water-soluble colored pencils and a waterbrush. * Learn about choosing a good subject when you are drawing small and fast and look at examples. * Plan a page so the sketches form a cohesive story and explore different layouts.
Supply list:
Required:
* A medium-sized sketchbook sketchbook (about 5x8 to 8x10). * Drawing media is students choice. Bring a selection of colors, pencils, markers and pens that you enjoy drawing with. Students will spend some class time swatching and experimenting to select a compact pocket version of their regular kit that is easy to use and effective. Watercolorists should plan on using a waterbrush and a very limited palette, but might consider trying water-soluble colored pencils. * Students will receive an illustrated handout explaining the core concepts of the workshop.
Optional: My favorite travel tools are colored pencils and markers. Please bring drawing tools that you have experience with and are confident using.
