Your favorite opera expert John Frey will be enhancing your enjoyment of the upcoming New York Met Opera Season Broadcasts that will be shown at the PAC at Cal Poly. LLCC is sponsoring John's previews for each of these operas prior to their showings in the theater venues. The previews will be a discussion of the plots and characters that will prepare you to better understand and enjoy these new MET productions.
Fliegende Hollander
World premiere: Dresden, Court Opera, 1843. Der Fliegende Hollander is the earliest of Wagners operatic creations to remain in the repertory. The two lead roles represent archetypes to which the composer would return, in one form or another, in most of his later works: the otherworldly stranger and the woman who sacrifices herself for his salvation. The works unearthly ambiance is impressive but only one aspect of it: Both the world of nature and of the supernatural are magnificently evoked in the score.
The great bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel returns to the company for the first time since 2012 in the title role of the cursed sea captain doomed to sail the open ocean for eternity. Valery Gergiev conducts a new production by François Girard, whose visionary 2013 take on Parsifal set the recent Met standard for Wagner stagings. With sweeping sets by John Macfarlane, Girards new production turns the Met stage into a rich, layered tableau reminiscent of a vast oil painting. The gifted German soprano Anja Kampe, in her Met debut, is the devoted Senta, whose selfless love is what the Dutchman seeks, with bass Franz-Josef Selig as her father, Daland, and tenor Sergey Skorokhodov as her deserted former lover, Erik.

John Frey taught chemistry and engaged in chemical research for 45 years at several universities and is now retired. He served on the Board of Directors of Festival Mozaic from 2014-2017, OperaSLO from 1999-present, Lifelong Learners of the Central Coast from 2012-present and SLO Master Chorale. He is a member of the Rotary Club of SLO. He teaches courses on opera and musical theater for LLCC and OperaSLO. He has 70 years of choral experience and has performed in the chorus of OperaSLO. He has a lifelong passion for opera and musical theater.
