Emily St John Mandel at Boswell for The Glass Hotel
Alas, this event has been cancelled. Tickets will be refunded by Brown Paper Tickets.
Celebrate Boswells 11th anniversary with Emily St. John Mandel and the release of her new novel, The Glass Hotel, the follow-up to Station Eleven, which was a community read for Shorewood, Menomonee Falls, and UW Parkside. Well toast 11 years as we turn Bookstore Boswell into Hotel Boswell for the evening.
Heres Daniels recommendation: Its 1999, and the crowd is dancing like its the end of the world. And while Y2K is on everyones minds, this is no repeat of Station Eleven, but it has that same sense of mystery, between the morphing characters (Vincent Smith alone goes from pauper to princess and back again) and the jumps across time and place, from a remote hotel off the coast of British Columbia to the posh restaurants of New York and on to a ship in the Pacific Ocean. Yes, there is a disaster at the center of the story, a Ponzi scheme of epic proportions, but thats just one of the betrayals and thefts that populate the tale. Its hard not to get lost in The Glass Hotel, an ethereal and moody novel that Im still thinking about long after I turned the last page.
Publishers Weekly called the novel wonderful, noting that This ingenious, enthralling novel probes the tenuous yet unbreakable bonds between people and the lasting effects of momentary carelessness. And Kirkus Reviews called it strange, subtle, and haunting.
