Booksmith presents Daniel Clowes
Booksmith hosts pioneering cartoonist, illustrator, graphic novelist and screenwriter Daniel Clowes for the oversized deluxe Fantagraphics Studio Edition Daniel Clowes: Original Art. He'll be in conversation with Rina Ayuyang (Blame This on the Boogie).

Original Art: Daniel Clowes turns the spotlight on one of the comics mediums most dynamic creators. This volume draws from Clowess nearly 30 years of comics art, ranging from his seminal one-man anthology, Eightball (in which Ghost World was originally serialized), to his most recent graphic novel, 2016s best-selling time travel thriller, Patience. The edition features over 150 pages of art from 1989present, plus new covers, endpapers, and other surprises from Clowes, including five unpublished pages of an abandoned graphic novel and an illustrated glossary of obsolete production techniques used for their original publication. The book also includes several tipped-in pages of clear acetate and vellum to perfectly approximate some of these production processes, making this a one-of-a-kind art object.

Daniel Clowes was born in Chicago, IL, on April 14, 1961. He attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and began his career as an alternative cartoonist in 1985 with the short-lived comic book series Lloyd Llewellyn. In 1989, he created the seminal comic book series Eightball, which included the darkly comic Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron, his savage take on the comics industry, Pussey!, and the breakthrough hit Ghost World. Eightball earned the artist a large following and amassed multiple Harvey, Eisner and Ignatz Awards. In 2001, the film adaptation of Ghost World, based on a script by Clowes and director Terry Zwigoff, won the Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay among other accolades. His most recent graphic novel was the science-fiction love story, Patience. 2020 will see the release of the oversized deluxe Fantagraphics Studio Edition Daniel Clowes: Original Art. Clowes's work has appeared in The New Yorker, Time, Newsweek and many other magazines. In 2011, Clowes received the PEN Literary Award for Graphic Literature. He lives in Oakland, CA.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Rina Ayuyang was always inspired by the Sunday newspaper funnies and slice-of-life tales. Her short stories have been nominated for the Ignatz and Eisner awards and she has been honored with a Society of Illustrators silver medal. Her recently published graphic novel, Blame This on the Boogie was published by Drawn and Quarterly and explores family, ethnic identity and musical mania. Ayuyang lives in Oakland, CA with her husband and son.
