The Consent of Speaking Harmony : DOWLAND WORKS Emma Kirkby and friends
Dowland Works was formed in 2013 to mark the 450th anniversary of that consummate lutenist John Dowland. It has become a sort of club for young performers and seasoned specialists including Dame Emma Kirkby to explore his songs in their various guises from solos to magical four-part airs.
Dowland also had a mighty influence on his contemporaries, particularly John Danyel whose one book, Songs to the Lute, Viol and Voice (1606) is a firm favourite of members. So it is a special joy to welcome our viol players Harry Buckoke and Peter McCarthy. As a foil to Dowland and Daniel we have on occasions added songs & dialogues of Cavalier composers such as the Lawes brothers and the Restoration delights of Henry Purcell, which will feature at this concert too.
Members of our club have formed their own duos and consorts elsewhere, and were pleased to be able to showcase some of those achievements.
"Melancholy was Dowlands calling card but delight and fun filled this glorious concert" "Clear voices, precise diction and virtuoso finger-work" THE LATEST
