WRA Benefit Breakfast
Windows on the Bay
Bellingham, WA
Share this event:

This has been such an exciting year for Whatcom Rowing! We've seen both Masters and Junior membership increase. Following success on the race course, we have invested in a new boat to allow our members to be more competitive.

Thank you to all of you who have contributed to such a year. The 2019 breakfast was the most successful to date, allowing WRA to offer over $5000 in program scholarships and update some of our
equipment. We're already looking forward to a great 2020 and I wanted to reach out and let you all know about some of the what the Board of Directors has been working on and tell you to save the date for the 7th Annual Benefit Breakfast on February 28, 2020.

As our club grows, we want to give back to our community and next year will see some exciting expansion in our youth outreach. So far, with your generosity, we have been able to offer youth scholarships, and starting in 2020, WRA will be partnering with the Bellingham School District, adding "Erg Ed" into the PE curriculum in middle schools. This program helps increase access to rowing and eliminate barriers of transportation, cost, and water access by bringing indoor rowing curriculum and ergs into the schools. Erg Ed started in 2010 in Seattle through the George Pocock Rowing Foundation (GPRF) and has since spread to 11 other cities nationwide. The Bellingham Erg Ed pilot program will start in January in Fairhaven and Kulshan Middle Schools.

I am pleased to announce that Heather Alschuler, the National Erg Ed Program Director at GPRF will be our keynote speaker at the 2020 breakfast. Besides running the Erg Ed program and its development, she has a very successful rowing career, having rowed at University of Michigan, earning All-American honors and the Big Ten Rower of the Year. She then rowed for the Canadian National Team from 2004-2008, competing in the 2008 Olympics in the women's eight.

Mark your calendars for the breakfast on February 28 at Windows On the Bay and hear more about what WRA is doing beyond our boathouse.
