We're kicking off our year of Albuquerque Association of Gifted and Talented Students meet-ups with a hands-on lesson in Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! To help disrupt the cycle of throwing out clothes and purchasing more, more, and more, we are thrilled to participate in a "Mend and Repair" sewing class taught by Joan Ellis. Nob Hill Fabrics has generously agreed to open their store for this private AAGTS event, and Ms. Ellis is extending us a special $20/child group rate instead of the usual $40/child for her class.
Supplies: please bring a roll of thread and a pair of scissors, preferably labeled with your name. If you forget, Nob Hill Fabrics will have thread and scissors available for purchase during the class. If you also have sewing needles and/or a seam ripper, bring those as well. Bring in clothes that could use a little mend or repair - shirts that need a button, jeans with a rip, kids' pants that need a hem or need to be converted into play shorts, a patch that needs to be sewn on. If you already threw those things out, don't worry - we will have plenty of things on hand to mend.
The skills our kids learn here will serve them well for a lifetime, empowering them to take control of their choices and maximize what they already have. Our consumption of consumable goods such as clothing has an astounding effect on our environment. If you'd like to do some related research with your child, the Netflix documentary "True Cost" is a good place to start.
Instruction is designed for kids age 8-18. Parents are invited but not required to attend. Class size is limited so please sign up today to reserve your spot. If you are not able to sign up because the class is full, please email us at info@aagts.org so we can start a waitlist for the next one.
