Two Masters: The Men Behind the University of Minnesota's Architecture
Much of the U of M's sprawling Twin Cities campus was shaped by two of the state's most celebrated architects: Cass Gilbert and Clarence H. Johnston. Although Gilbert got the award for creating the campus master plan, Johnston won the commission for the execution of the buildings themselves, resulting in an irreparable rift between the two friends. Join renowned architectural historians as they provide fascinating insights into the early development of the two masters talents, friendship, and contributions to the University's architecture, and pick apart the ensuing cooperation and disagreements that continue to shape its environs today. Optional walking tours to follow.
