Robert T. Matsui U.S. Courthouse & Kennedy Learning Center | Architect-Led Tour (2019 Experience Architecture)
Hosted by the AIACV Committee for Architecture Education (CAE)

Registration is only needed for the architect-led tour. For the self-guided tour, please visit the event page for an art guide.

The Nacht & Lewis and HLM Design team created a design to solve a functionally complex program and a constrained downtown urban site, while also presenting a dignified representation of the United States judicial system in Sacramento, California. The 16-story building, now named the Robert T. Matsui Courthouse, houses courtrooms, judicial chambers and public space, all expressed volumetrically in the exterior design.

After the tour, stop by to see the student charrette exhibit re-imagining the Kennedy Learning Center. This summer, AIA architects and high school students teamed together on a charrette to provide ideas and envision improvements to the Center to make it more interactive and educational for visitors of all ages. The Center was created to serve as an educational hub promoting public understanding of the judicial process and civil education through student participation.

Exhibit and event lead by: Laura Knauss, AIA, and Ida Clair, AIA

Sponsors : Comstocks Magazine, SMUD, Milgard Windows & Doors, Lionakis, and Fulcrum Properties, Nacht & Lewis and XL Construction.

Experience Architecture is a public-outreach event designed by AIA Central Valley to facilitate greater transparency with the public in how architects create our built environment and how it impacts their daily lives; to create an ongoing dialogue to inform a distinct, regional, architectural identity; and to highlight existing relationships between the region and its architecture. The 2019 event is scheduled from October 1st - 13th.
