Mary Stallings in LA One Performance Only
San Francisco's legendary Jazz Vocalist Mary Stallings will be in concert at UCLA Sunday September 29th backing Mary will be pianist Paul Cornish, drummer Kevin Van den Elzen, guitarist Tom Rizzo, bassist David Ross and on Tenor Sax Dayna Stephans.

Mary Stallings, vocals
One of eleven children, she grew up listening at home to her uncle, saxophonist and bandleader Orlando Stallings.
Discovered by Dizzy Gillespie while she was still a teenager, she joined R&B pioneer Louis Jordan's Tympani Five before she had graduated from high school.
In those early years, she performed with jazz giants like Ben Webster, Cal Tjader, Earl Hines, Red Mitchell, Teddy Edwards, and the Montgomery brothers (Wes, Monk, and Buddy), spent a year singing with Billy Eckstines band, and did two tours of South America with Dizzy.
She spent three years with the Count Basie Orchestra, before leaving singing to raise her child, R&B singer Adriana Evans.
After nearly three decades away from singing, Mary returned in the late 1980s with an engagement at the Village Vanguard, prompting the New York Times to crown her as perhaps the finest jazz singer singing today.
In 2017, she joined the ranks of previous winners like Max Roach, Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Elvin Jones, Keith Jarrett, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter, when she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastian Jazz Festival, and only the 3rd woman in history to receive the award.
Since resuming her career, Mary has sung with the crème of jazz artists, including Gene Harris, Geri Allen, Clark Terry, Eric Reed, and Bill Charlap.
Dayna Stephens, sax
2019 winner of the Rising Star award for tenor sax, and #2 for tenor sax overall, behind legend Joe Lovano, Dayna Stephens has garnered critical acclaim for his playing, compositions and arrangements. Brad Faberman cites Dayna as the JazzTimes Editors Pick, writing, His big, warm lines are full of notes and intent but also gusts of wind, bodies of water. DownBeats James Hale describes Gratitude, the saxophonist/composers eighth release as a leader, as a highly cinematic listening experience, full of roiling seas and shifting skies.
Based in NYC, Dayna has toured and recorded with all the top living jazz artists, including Brad Mehldau, Fred Hersch, Billy Childs, Geoffrey Keezer, Taylor Eigsti, Muhal Richard Abrams, Kenny Barron, Theo Hill, Gerald Clayton and Aaron Parks; trumpet players Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell, Sean Jones, Terell Stafford, Brian Lynch, Ambrose Akinmusire and Michael Rodriguez; saxophone players Wayne Shorter, Jaleel Shaw, Ben Wendel, Chris Potter, John Ellis and Walter Smith III; bass players Ben Street, Rufus Reid, Kiyoshi Kitagawa, Joe Sanders, Linda Oh, Doug Weiss, Larry Grenadier and Harish Raghavan; vocalists Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens and Sachal Vasandani; and guitar players John Scofield, Julian Lage, Charles Altura, Mike Moreno, Lage Lund, Pete Bernstein and Carlos Santana.
Paul Cornish, piano
A native of Houston, Texas, Paul won a gold medal in the 2013 NAACP ACT-SO Competition, and was selected as a finalist for the 2014 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Competition. Hes a two-time winner of the outstanding soloist award at Montereys Next Generation Jazz Festival. In March 2018, he took the American Jazz Pianist Competitions Grand Bohemian Prize. Paul is currently in his first year at the prestigious Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA.
Tom Rizzo, guitar
LA based guitarist and composer Tom Rizzo plays music from Gregorian Chant to BeBop, as well as pop, funk, folk, and world music. Originally a member of Doc Severinsens fusion group Xebron, Tom was also a regular member of the Tonight Show Band, and he composed much of the music heard on the show during his tenure.
His first album as a leader, A Secret Garden, features Peter Erskine, Bob Sheppard and Dave Carpenter. The second album, Guitar Plus Eight, features Joe LaBarbera, Tom Warrington, Bob Sheppard, and Rich Eames, plus a Birth of the Cool horn section consisting of Tuba, French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet, and Soprano Sax, arranged by long time collaborator Nick Lane. The resulting juxtaposition of the guitar with this instrumentation makes for a very unique and modern recording.
Tom has also recorded three albums with Maynard Ferguson, two with Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, and one with Doc and Xebron, which he also produced and composed the music for.
Kevin Van den Elzen, drums
Kevin graduated in 2014 from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and then attended on full scholarship the Thornton School of Music at USC, from where he graduated with departmental honors. He studied with Peter Erskine, Roy McCurdy, Ndugu Chancler and Aaron Serfaty. Jazz artists with whom he has performed include Dick Oatts, Bob Mintzer, Larry Carlton, the New York Voices, Eric Reed, Nick Mancini, Kim Richmond, John Clayton, James Carter, Jasper Blom, Bill Cunliffe, Paquito dRivera, and Josh Nelson.
Dave Ross, bass
Dave began playing bass at age 58, thinking that being a jazz musician would provide him with a hedge against disappointment, when his life eventually comes to a close. Playing an instrument with primarily a functional role has allowed Dave the privilege of playing with artists with far more experience and accomplishments.
He is the band leader on the weekly Thursday Night Jazz Salon, at the Los Angeles Athletic Club, featuring an all-star band including Rickey Woodard, Nolan Shaheed, Mark Massey and David Arnay, backing celebrated singers, like Barbara Morrison and Cathy Segal-Garcia.
