Borders, Spaces and Brown Eyes
To launch their 25th anniversary season, the Davalos Dance Company will remount their first full-evening work originally titled "Borders, Spaces and Brown-eyed Girls." The 2019 version, "Borders, Spaces and Brown-Eyes" features an all new cast of men and women of the Latina/o/x diaspora.
Borders, Spaces and Brown Eyes is an evening of dance theater that explores what humans have and do not have in common by focusing on the Latina/o/x body. This evening of dance encompasses a multitude of borders and spaces from the safe to the dangerous, the tranquil to the restless. The text and choreography are multilayered works that speak to the issues of racism, immigration, sexism and constructs of power using the dancers personal history to document, uncover and discuss their relationship to brown. Sadly, since the premiere in 1995, the dialogue and debate about the border and immigration has escalated rather than abated. Davalos Dance feels the urgency to share our experiences, our stories once again. The work asks: What is it about the brown body that frightens you?
Choreography and text by CatherineMarie Davalos(with the dancers) Dancers: Felicia Cazares, Rogelio Lopez, Edgar Mendez, Catalina OConnor, Hailey Yaffee.
