*Note: WOW: Well, that was fast! Within a couple of hours of posting to Facebook, it looks like all our tickets are taken! We are very sorry, but given the limited size of this very special space, we are not able to make more tickets available at this time. We will be confirming attendance with ticket holders in mid-September, so it may be that some additional spots will open up at that time.
What better place to celebrate Banned Books Week than in Seattle's most spectacular speakeasy, the observatory bar on the 35th floor of the Smith Tower. Enjoy food, cocktails, live music, and a reading of the juiciest bits of banned literature from local literary luminaries Paul Constant, Reagan Jackson and Susanna Ryan. No Cover Charge: for this night only, Smith Tower is generously waiving their usual Observatory entry fee.
Grab a drink and mingle with other book lovers, or just gaze out Gatsby-style at one of our city's most breathtaking views. This event runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m so drop in anytime, but be sure to be there around 7 p.m. when we'll enjoy live music by Elizabeth Carpenter and Victor Horky, followed by a short banned books reading featuring Paul Constant of the Seattle Review of Books, writer, artist, activist, and podcaster Reagan Jackson, and creator of the Seattle Walk Report, Susanna Ryan. Photobooth, free books and party favors: no fancy dress needed, but then again where else are you going to wear that flapper dress, or those spats?
Don't forget your photo I.D. This event is 21 and over, and drinks and food are on you. Admittance is free, but help us to manage the crowd size by registering here: ticket required, & four ticket maximum per person. Located in the Observatory on the 35th floor of Seattle's original Skyscraper, this prohibition era inspired bar overlooks the Puget Sound and Seattle region. It features an intriguing menu and craft cocktails that pay homage to Smith Tower's rum-running roots and Chinese Room history.
This program kicks off Booktoberfest, the Library's annual celebration of books, beer and good cheer that takes place in bars and pubs across Seattle. Join us for Karoake, a trilogy of Trivia nights, Drink & Draw, 'Ales from the Crypt spooky stories in bars, Halloween Horror Movie Marathon, a Book Nerd Party, and more! Be on the lookout for Booktoberfest drink coasters at events and at bars all across the city. Find a full roster of events at www.spl.org/booktoberfest
