Being Venice
Venice, a writer, is having trouble with the men in her life. On the night her ex-hippy dad Arthur arrives in Sydney to sleep on the sofa of her tiny apartment for a week, she is dumped by her lover and begins an ill-advised affair with charismatic philosopher-best-friend Lenny. Visiting from New Zealand to teach a creative writing workshop and luxuriate in extended sunshine hours, Arthur carefully ignores his daughter?s increasingly outrageous attempts to capture his attention. That is, until Venice insists.
Being Venice is a wryly tender study of the regressions, the absurd domestic moves that so-called ?adult? family relationships can entail. Moving, like its eponymous lead character, between inner city studio apartment, Edward Hopper-esque suburbs, and dreamy harbor, this intelligently staged, strikingly-lensed film is also a love letter to the city of Sydney itself.
