CANCELED - Seattle Peace Chorus presents "Celebrate Beethoven: Music Overcomes Adversity"
CANCELED - The Seattle Peace Chorus is proud to present "Celebrate Beethoven: Music Overcomes Adversity" to commemorate the 250th year since Beethovens birth. In recognition that Beethoven lost his hearing at age 29 and famously continued to compose some of the worlds greatest music, Seattle Peace Chorus is reaching out to members of the hard-of-hearing community and providing for them in this concert by creating a visual display to illuminate the highlights of the work. We plan to have a pre-concert educational program on the life and times of Beethoven, and have American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters at the concerts.

There is much to learn about Beethoven, the life he led, the politics of his day, and what made it possible for him to overcome the most difficult adversity imaginable for a composerdeafness, starting at the age of 29 or 30. The great composer was filled with the spirit of the Enlightenment as embodied in the writings of Rousseau and Votaire. Beethoven fervently believed in democracy, separation of church and state, freedom of expression, and rational truth. Yet he lived in a strict monarchy that was operated like a police state, and he saw Napoléon reject democratic principles to declare himself emperor.

The chorus will sing Beethovens Mass in C, the Prisoners Chorus from his only opera, Fidelio, and the final movement of Missa Solemnis Agnus Dei, which includes the Dona Nobis Pacem, a prayer for peace. In addition, our orchestra and pianists will perform significant instrumental works as we tell the story of Beethovens life.
