Shakespeare Summer Camp
The Elite Theatre Company in Oxnard, California, announces its inaugural Shakespeare Summer Camp, running Monday through Friday, for two weeks July 29 through August 9, from 1 - 5 pm. This camp will be run by Shakespeare director and actor Bill Walthall. Open to students 13-20 years of age, this camp is FREE.
So much of public schools educational approach to Shakespeare is based on simply reading certain works and titles. But this ignores the key, says Bill Walthall of thebillshakespeareproject.com, PLAY! These works were never meant to be just read (particularly not silently on ones home as homework), they were meant to be performed. Well be getting students out of their seats and onto their feet, exploring Shakespeare from a performance perspective.
Over the course of the two week period, students will learn Shakespearean history, scansion, and performance tips, as well as perform in scenes and monologues. Working in pairs, groups and individually, students will be taught scene study skills that work beyond the works of Shakespeare and will have the opportunity to develop monologues that can be used as audition pieces. The camp will culminate in a performance on Saturday, August 10.
Bill Walthall has taught English and Drama at local high schools, coaching students to award winning presentations. An actor, writer and director, he taught a Shakespeare for Actors class for adults in 2018 at Camarillo Skyway Playhouse, where he directed As You Like It earlier this year.
