Music for a Summers Evening with the Choir of Kings College London (Joseph Fort Director)
In this new program, the Choir of Kings College London presents a selection of lesser-known choral treasures from Britain. In what is probably its first US performances, Gustav Holsts Dream Tryst conveys the mystical sound world that would soon find him fame with The Planets. Gerald Finzis Seven Poems of Robert Bridges are well loved in the UK but less well known in the US, and contain several beautiful gems, while John Rutters Birthday Madrigals feature the popular choral composer wearing a slightly jazzy hat as he sets these Shakespearean texts. The choir pairs these partsong settings with Frank Martins beautiful Mass for Double Choir, which they have just recorded to critical acclaim, Gramophone Magazine concluding: this is a performance of astonishing intensity and musicality. The choir warmly invites singing friends to join them in a performance of Rachmaninoffs Bogoroditse Devo, at the start of the second half. Gustav HOLST (1874-1934) 5 Part-Songs, Op. 12 [13] Dream Tryst Ye little birds Her eyes the glow-worm lend thee Now is the month of Maying Come to me Frank MARTIN (1890-1974) Mass for Double Choir [25] Kyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus & Benedictus Agnus Dei INTERMISSION Gerald FINZI (1901-1956) Seven Poems of Robert Bridges, Op. 17 [19] I praise the tender flower I have loved flowers that fade My spirit sang all day Clear and gentle stream Nightingales Haste on, my joys!
