Value-Adding Grains with Local and Direct Markets: Winter Grain Field Day
Marketing grains directly and/or locally can be a way for growers to capture considerably more value from grain crops. Grains can be excellent rotational crops in high-value crop regions, and help keep larger tracts farmland in production if they can produce above average returns for growers. Join WSU Extension for this Cascadia Grains regional field day to learn more about winter grain varieties for these markets, and WSU and OSUs efforts to support local grain economies in the western PNW. Large plots of four select wheats and barleys from WSUs Bread Lab and OSUs Barley Project and two European varieties of hybrid rye will be on display. Representatives from local grain markets will introduce growers to local market opportunities and the quality of grain theyre seeking.

Program Features:
- Viewing of six hard red winter wheats, winter malting and hulless food barleys, and hybrid ryes
- Discussions about variety development for local markets
- Discussion about local baking, brewing, and distilling grain markets
- Opportunity for networking
- Catered lunch
