Malini Srhidaran- https://soundcloud.com/malini-sridharan/sets/the-shewings-of-julian-of Malini Sridharan is a songwriter and composer based in Brooklyn. She will be performing songs from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, a song cycle centered around the writings of the 13th century mystic Julian of Norwich. Selections from and interpretations of Julians writings on love, forgiveness, and inspiration are set above an arrangement of woodwinds, cello and piano that captures the lush and contemplative feeling of Julians work. Mali will be joined by Lenna Pierce (Meaner Pencil) on cello, Allison Heim on clarinet, Molly Gibson on flute, and Fran Piccone on bassoon.
Julian of Norwich (b. 1342) experienced a mystical religious awakening during a near death experience at the age of 30. Inspired by her visions, she became an anchorite and dedicated herself to contemplation until her death. Julian was famed during her lifetime and has been remembered in the centuries since for the vision of peace, divine love, and freedom from sin that she presented in her work The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, the first known book written by a woman in English.
