Physical Modeling of Offshore Wind Turbines: A story of research and consulting

Abstract:
Offshore wind turbine foundations are subjected to normal ocean wave loading in addition to millions of low-amplitude load cycles over their lifetime as the turbine blades rotate. The effects of these low-amplitude cycles on the overall lifetime performance of the turbine foundation are not well understood. This talk will focus on a project where consultants and researchers collaborated to bridge the gap between the need for design guidance in consulting and the advanced technologies developed by academics in order to help the client and bring new information closer to practical application. A scaled physical modeling testing program was performed at the University of California at Davis Center for Geotechnical Modeling using the 1-m radius geotechnical centrifuge to simulate similar loading patterns as those imposed on typical offshore wind turbine foundations. This talk will highlight the benefits of geotechnical centrifuge modeling used for this study, provide technical evaluation of results from the data set, and discuss the resulting implications on offshore wind turbine foundation design with suggestions for future work and research.

Speaker: Jacquelyn Allmond, PhD, PE  Project Engineer (Geosyntec Consultants)

Bio:
Dr. Jacquelyn Allmond is a practicing civil engineer at Geosyntec Consultants with a focus in geotechnical, geoenvironmental, and earthquake engineering. She received her bachelors degree from the University of Delaware in civil engineering and her masters and doctoral degrees from the University of California at Davis in geotechnical engineering. Her graduate research involved performance evaluation of rocking shallow foundations for seismic energy dissipation on liquefiable and saturated soils. As a practitioner in the geotechnical engineering field, Dr. Allmond is involved in slope stability and seepage assessments of dams, levees, landfills, and geologic formations, as well as site-specific seismic evaluations including liquefaction, lateral spreading, and other seismic hazards, site response analysis, and mitigation techniques for subsurface liquefiable soils.
