Musical Theatre Audition Technique Workshop
MUSICAL THEATRE AUDITION TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP -
A three-day, intensive, hands-on workshop for Actors and Singers at The Barn Players with actor-director-teacher KIP NIVEN
The material covered is based on: Kip's forty-year career as a performer: with extensive experience in Theatre (including Broadway and Off-Broadway, Regional Theatre, and Summer Stock); over a dozen Feature Films; guest-starring roles in over a hundred Television Mini-Series, Movies of the Week, and Episodic Series; and numerous national and regional commercials; His experience as a teacher: as a leader of Workshops and Master Classes on campuses throughout the country; as an Artist-in-Residence; and as the interim Director of the BFA Musical Theatre Program (2001'04) at Emerson College, Boston, MA; and, especially, his studies and long association with the renowned teacher, David Craig, author of On Singing Onstage and A Performer Prepares.
The core of what Mr. Craig taughtand what Kip has adapted to a Workshop/Master Class formatis a technique that allows Actor-Singers to apply what they have learned about scene study and monologues and character analysis to the specifics of a song.
It also gives Singer-Actors a technique that allows for a more theatrically realistic performance style than they might be asked to show in a traditional, classical recital setting.
SCHEDULE: Day One: A three-hour Lecture/Demonstration Session, during which Participants will learn the concepts and techniques of a Musical Theatre Audition. All Participants will prepare an assigned song for this session and will practice the Workshop's concepts and techniques on this "neutral/common" song. Day Two: A series of fifty-minute One-on-One Sessions, during which each Participant will "audition" with a song of his or her choice (up-tempo or ballad). These sessions are the heart and soul of The Workshop. Each Participant will have the opportunity to perform his/her song, and will receive extensive feedback on how best to enhance his/her performanceutilizing techniques learned during The Workshop. Day Three: A continuation of the One-on-One Sessions. A Final Presentation Session, during which each Participant will perform his or her audition piecewith Kip's final notes and comments.
All Participants must attend the Lecture/Demonstration and are strongly encouraged to attend all remaining sessions of the Workshop (including other Participants' One-on- One Sessions). They will all be provided with a Handbook of terms used throughout the Workshop. Auditors are invited to attend all sessions. The Barn will provide an Accompanist for all working sessions.
Kip will give information to all Participants about the perils, the frustrations, and believe it or not the joys of auditioning for a role in a musical.
