Christine Vachon is an Independent Spirit Award-winning producer, a recipient of the Producer Award from the Gotham Independent Film Awards and director of the MFA program at Stony Brook University. Her company, Killer Films, has produced dozens of impactful and award-winning independent films. She has produced all of Todd Haynes' films since the early 1990s, including Safe, Far From Heaven, I'm Not There, and Carol. Each of these films is interested in lives lived in secret, and affected (or damaged) by socially enforced repression of characters' identities. With her impressive body of work, Vachon has challenged the film industry to represent stories of lives that have, until very recently, been excluded from the cultural landscape. Vachon's other films include the Oscar-winning Boys Don't Cry, the dramatization of the real-life story of Brandon Teena and more recently, First Reformed and Vox Lux.
Vachon's talk will be about independent film production and story and ethics in film. Afterwards she will be joined in conversation by local film critic, writer and filmmaker Charles Mudede. This event is a co-presentation of Cornish College of the Arts, the University of Washington, and Three Dollar Bill Cinema.
