Strata Vocal Ensemble concert
What is Love? These words, taken from Shakespeares Twelfth Night, are the focus of the second concert in our 2018-2019 season. And what a wealth of songs we had to choose from!
Intimate poems penned by Eric Whitacres former lover are the text of his haunting work, Five Jewish Love Songs.
Love for the divine is expressed in Talliss perfect motet If Ye Love Me, Villets Hymn de la Vièrge, Rachmaninovs Bogoritse Devo, and Rheinbergers Abendlied.
Love for a child is highlighted in Golden Slumbers Kiss Your Eyes, part of Stephen Chatmans Elizabethan Summer song cycle; and two beautiful love poems by WB Yeats, The Cloths of Heaven and Innisfree are brought to life by Mark Sirett and Michael McGlynn.
That first blush of new love is captured by Claude Debussys impressionist painting of Dieu! Quil La Fait Bon Regardez and the bittersweet of love lost is heard in Underneath the Stars by Kate Rusby. Rounding out the program are Rutters settings of three traditional songs: The Girl I Left Behind Me, O Waly Waly and Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron.
We invite you to come and let us fill your hearts and minds with songs of love. What better way to spend a few hours in the lovely month of May.
