On Saturday, April 27, 2019, please join the Mt. Baker Group of the Sierra Club and Zero Waste Washington for "The Truth About Plastics," a fun and educational plastics forum at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham.
This all-day event will explore the life cycle of plastics; the harmful impacts along the way; and how we all, especially industry and government, can reduce or eliminate those impacts. Registration, program information and speaker details are at https://plastics.brownpapertickets.com. Registration is $15 general admission, $10 seniors, and students are free! Lunch and snacks are included with advance registration. Doors open at 8:45 am, program begins at 9:30, and the forum ends at 3:30 pm.

Speaker Information:
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Peter Ross, VP Research, Ocean Wise (Vancouver Aquarium). Dr. Ross is one of the top researchers on microplastics and microfibers in the ocean environment, impacting wildlife. He Is working with numerous major recreation companies, such as REI and Patagonia to help identify solutions to the microfibers that are shedding off their products.
Dr. Patricia Hunt, Meyer Distinguished Professor, School of Molecular Bioscience, WSU. Dr. Hunt discovered adverse effect of BPA (Bisphenol A) in plastic items on reproductive systems of mammals. She continues to work on the impacts of toxic chemicals in plastic products.
Dr. Heather Trim, Executive Director, Zero Waste Washington. Dr. Trim has been involved in many legislative efforts to protect against plastics and helped lead the effort to pass the Seattle plastic bag & styrofoam serviceware bans; Zero Waste Washington has helped communities pass numerous local ordinances.
Dr. Mark Peyron, Asst. Professor, Plastics & Composites Engineering, Western Washington University. Dr. Peyron researches biodegradable plastics, polymer characterization and additives in plastics. He and his students do research to help the Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation, which develops solutions to help move aerospace forward in Washington state.
Alex Ramel, Extreme Oil Director, Stand.earth. Alex works help develop sustainable local communities. Key campaigns include reducing fossil fuel export and major export facilities as well as reducing the use of disposable cups at major companies, such as Starbucks.
Gwen Larned, former Zero Waste Coordinator, WWU. Gwen, a WWU grad, is a young leader and educator on how to attain a zero waste lifestyle. While at WWU, she helped create innovative solutions to address recycling and waste reduction.
Rick Eggerth, Vice-Chair, Mt. Baker Group of the Sierra Club. Rick is a retired attorney with years of toxic waste litigation experience against the oil industry. He has researched the history of the impacts on the environmental movement of the development of the plastic industry.
PLEASE NOTE: This event provides the story of plastics: where they come from, how theyre made, the consequences they present, and how they can be better managed.
