WE REGRET THAT, DUE TO VENUE ISSUES BEYOND OUR CONTROL, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. PLEASE CONTACT MMAIMPROV@GMAIL.COM WITH QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.
Come and have a fun evening with MMA Improv, the improv group that makes you "Tap out with laughter!" This all-Anchorage troupe uses audience suggestions to create scenes on the spot--and is doing it again on Friday, February 22, creating "Custom Comedy" just for you.
MMA (Mostly Melanin Arts) performs improv live onstage at least once a month at Out North's NEW DOWNTOWN LOCATION--the former Alaska Experience Theater at 333 W. 4th Ave. Every scene is 100% new and has never been seen before (and never will be again). All the creative havoc is based on your suggestions-making for a great night of creativity, laughter and surprise.
How do they do it?
MMA Improv players create scenes using a range of improvisation games. These are the same kinds of games made popular by the U.S. TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway?"(originally hosted by Drew Carey on ABC -- and later revived with host Aisha Tyler on The CW network.)
In fact, improvisational theater has been around for a while. In recent history, drama games have been long used to train those in the theater, from professional actors to young children. Many of the games are the same ones that helped train some of the greatest comics and comedic/sketch actors of our time.
The MMA Improv troupe, which formed in late 2017, includes: Darryl Akins (founder), Lord Zilverbakk Omega Prime (Jamal Baskerville), Jana Lage, Corinthia Rabb McCoy, Sunni Mebane, Sonya Senkowsky, Dave Souza and Briana Marie Thibodeaux. (Joseph Robinson has moved out of state, and Michael Mason is super-busy, but if they're available again, we'll surely try to talk them into playing, too!)
Those onstage for any given show vary based on availability.
It's all presented by Obsidian Moon Entertainment, a nonprofit theater organization dedicated to providing opportunities for local performers as well as onstage representation for people of color in Alaska.
Some notes:
Leave the kids at home, please! (The show's usually not [too] raunchy, but anything can happen, so it's definitely not for children.)
The theater opens to the public at 7:30, but the show doesn't start until 8 p.m.
Unless otherwise noted, no alcoholic beverages or food will be served; we recommend you have a nice dinner first, then drop by.
Theater entrance is located near 4th & C on the C St. Side. LOOK FOR THE BIG MMA IMPROV BANNER ON THE FENCE!
Street parking is free after 6. Inexpensive pay lots are available nearby.
