This infectiously fun film tells the little-known story of how two cultures, Jewish and Latin, met on the dance floor at a time when America was racially segregated, and anti-Semitism was commonplace. Set to the Afro-Cuban sounds of Tito Puente and Celia Cruz, the film traces the mambos rise from its birth in Cuba to the peak of its popularity in 1950s New York when a group of free-spirited, mostly Jewish dancers received the nickname: the mamboniks. Still dancing today, this lovable, somewhat zany group of dancers tells the backstory of the trend that was immortalized in the movie Dirty Dancing. Tickets will be available at the PMA on March 17 subject to availability one half hour before film start time. Tickets for film only are not available.
