Marcus Shelby - Bay Area Now (BAN 5)
Marcus Shelby is an award-winning composer, arranger, educator and bassist, nationally recognized for his innovative and collaborative approach to composing and arranging for text, the visual arts, dance and theater. His credits include original scoring for film, theater and dance as well as jazz composition for his own groups, the 15-piece Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, the Marcus Shelby Trio and the Marcus Shelby Septet. Mr. Shelby has written an extensive series of original compositions and suites as well as orchestrated a broad survey of arrangements from great jazz big band composers Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Charles Mingus and Count Basie. Out of a desire to bring the heart of jazz closer to the public, Mr. Shelby will be inviting the audience throughout the evening to join in a dialogue exploring the creative process behind jazz composition and improvisation. Tonights performance features selections from the oratorio, Harriet Tubman: Bound for the Promised Land, performed by a quintet. This is a one of a kind opportunity for an intimate experience of Shelby's latest project.
