THE LOVE HANGOVER 5 in Toronto
Twenty years ago, the Love Hangover tradition began in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is now held in five cities, in two countries, each year on the evening after Valentine's Day. This is year five for The Love Hangover in Toronto (the only Canadian venue), where singers are paired with four others, for a daisy chain of duets and surprising combos and styles. LH favourites Ted Hawkins, Shelby Lamb and James Clark return with their sweet sultry rockin sounds, and are joined by jazzy newbies Sam Broverman, Whitney Ross-Barris and Ilana Waldston (founder of Recollectiv, which will receive proceeds from this year's show.) Zebulun Barnow (who brought the show to Toronto) co-hosts with Beverly Taft and romantic rhythm section Victor Bateman (bass & vocals) and Tania Gill (piano & vocals). There'll be jazz, country, pop, rock, and more on the roster. A great night of entertainment, and all for a good cause too!
PERFORMER BIOS:
As a kid in Chicago, ZEBULUN BARNOW started on piano and violin but switched to drums at age 8. As a teenager he began playing guitar, writing songs and playing punk, rock and originals in bands, moving on to insurgent country and electronica in his twenties. He toured much of the USA with those projects, and produced dozens of collections of his own original music. For ten years Zebulun performed with Blue Man Group, playing on Chapman stick, electric zither, bass guitar, electric guitar and percussion. In 2015 he and his wife (cellist Amber Walton-Amar) moved to Toronto where they perform together as Amber & Zebulun. Zebulun is responsible for bringing The Love Hangover to Toronto, and we are grateful.
Bassist, Vocalist, and Composer VICTOR BATEMAN has been actively involved in Toronto's music scene since 1981, when he moved here from Vancouver, B.C. His long list of credits as a sideman include recording and performing with a number of jazz, folk, and blues acts, including Murray McLaughlan, Ashley MacIsaac, Big Sugar, Chris Whiteley, Heartbreak Hill, The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, Quartette, Sylvia Tyson, and The Good Brothers. Victor also leads a jazz trio and has released two CDs which feature his own compositions.
Jazz singer and songwriter SAM BROVERMAN has performed in venues across Canada, the US, Europe and Asia. He began his pro singing career in Winnipeg, appearing in theatre and cabaret productions and also on the nationally televised shows "Hymn Sing" and "The Doug Crosley Show. Sam has made three acclaimed jazz recordings here in Toronto, and has just released Jewish Boys Christmas, a recording of his very popular annual December show. Hes twinkly, croony, smooth and funny.
Songwriting treasure JAMES CLARK is following up his beloved Yesterdays Misadventures release with a new CD of originals produced by Moe Berg (formerly of Pursuit of Happiness), out in 2019. James is a solid rock drummer, and plays guitar and sings, at The Horseshoe, Cameron House and Lees Palace, and in jaunts to Chicago, New York City and Madison, Wisconsin. Influences of Elvis Costello, Ray Davies, and Lennon & McCartney can be heard in his sweet strong singing and writing.
Acclaimed composer and pianist TANIA GILL is a key figure in the Toronto scenes of jazz and popular music. She has worked with diverse world-class artists including Deep Dark United, The Flying Bulgars, Brodie West, Andrew Downings Melodeon, Charles Spearins The Happiness Project, Mary Margaret OHara and Anthony Braxton. Tania has performed in major festivals and has toured internationally. Her long-awaited 2010 debut recording, Bolger Station (Barnyard Records), with Lina Allemano/tpt, Clinton Ryder/bass and Jean Martin/drums was disc of the week, and short- listed for disc of the year by The Globe and Mail, and was nominated for debut album of the year in The Village Voice jazz critics poll.
Stand-up drummer and singer TED HAWKINS performs his infectious originals and the best covers with Thelonious Hank (featuring Nichol Robertson) every Saturday at Castros on Queen East, and sings and drums with a faux Hawaiian group called the Hulagoons Wednesday nights at The Skyline (Queen West). His CD of jazz ballads (Music for 2:47am) is full of beautiful heartbreakers, and his recent T Hank CD of ten originals will make you laugh and tap your feet, thanks to Teds funny take on the misadventures of life.
Quirky popster SHELBY LAMB sings, plays guitar and piano, and writes and performs her own folk songs, which she has recorded to great acclaim. Her hit I Cant be Normal is a CBC Music favourite. Shelby is currently teaching music to people of all ages and abilities. She has aspirations to create a rock band program geared towards neuro-diversity. She is also currently working on an original album to be released in 2019.
WHITNEY ROSS-BARRIS is a jazz singer and songwriter who performs regularly around Toronto. In and amongst a varied career in live theatre, Whitney has released three jazz albums and has appeared as a guest singer and lyricist on two additional jazz recordings (notably, "The Art of Breath: Volume One," John MacMurchy). Her most recent self-titled album with The Bright Lunch Trio was released late 2017 and features all-original music written by herself and guitarist Nathan Hiltz.
Singer and lyricist BEVERLY TAFT sings bossa nova in Portuguese, chansonnettes in French, latin standards in Spanish, and jazz and novelties in English. Her repertoire includes chestnuts from the 1920s, originals from the 2010s, and lots in between. In addition to playing clubs and festivals throughout Ontario, she has performed in Japan, the U.S. and Brazil. For The Love Hangover, Beverly is co-host and producer, and especially fond of old country tunes that her jazz gigs dont usually include.
ILANA WALDSTON is not just a singer but a consummate storyteller, bringing her extensive theatre training into the world of jazz music. Whether shes breaking your heart with a beautiful ballad, moving you out of your seat with a swinging standard or tickling your funny bone with the unusual comedic songs for which shes best known; an evening with Ilana and the Jazz n Laughs Band is a guaranteed good time. Ilana is also the founder of Recollectiv, a weekly music group for people living with dementia, Alzheimers, brain injuries and any memory challenges.
