Elias Lammam Arabic Music & Percussion Workshops and Concert in Santa Cruz
Music/Percussion Workshops: 12:30pm to 4pm VIP Concert / Party: 7:30pm to 10pm
Arabic Music Introductory Workshop 12:30-1:30pm The day begins with a 1 hour workshop to introduce musicians and singers to basic Arabic music theory, including an explanation of maqam and quarter tones, and the differences between Arabic music and other genres. The class will learn a popular Arabic song that can be played on western instruments. This workshop also serves as an audition for those local musicians interested in joining Elias Lammam's Santa Cruz Arabic Music Student Ensemble. Musicians and/or singers experienced in Western classical music, jazz, or any type of world music are welcome to attend. Bring your instruments but no amps please.
String instruments such as violin, viola, cello, bass, and oud can be used for Arabic music with no conversion other than retuning. Fretted string instruments such as guitar can be converted in a few minutes with simple household objects. Keyboards and accordions can play some Arabic music but will require conversion or Arabic adaptation to play the full repertoire. Percussion instruments include tambourine/riqq, frame drums, and tabla/doumbek.
Percussion Workshop 2-4pm This workshop is for beginning to intermediate percussionists of all types. The first hour will focus on correct technique for playing riqq/tambourine, tabla/doubek, doholla, sagat/zils and various frame drums. This technique focus will help intermediate students clean up their technique to get better sound and improve speed, as well as beginning students. The second hour will focus on learning several Arabic rhythms. Students should bring their instrument. A few drums are available to borrow upon request in advance.
VIP Concert / Party 7:30-10:00pm An intimate gathering in this small venue for workshop attendees, fans and friends of Elias Lammam and his students. Elias' Santa Cruz Arabic Music Ensemble will open the show with a few popular songs. Elias will play a selection of his own compositions as well as classic Arabic tunes with guest percussionist Rony Dib of Lebanon. The concert will conclude with some popular Arabic dance tunes and everyone will be welcome to get up and dance if desired. Family-friendly, all-ages show.
