Lovers of ghazals, thumris and khayals in and around London are in for a special treat this winter.
Kalakar - a London based musical theatre company will premiere their first ever musical theatre, Begum Akhtar, at the iconic Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on 2nd March 2019. The musical showcases the trials and triumphs of Padma Bhushan Begum Akhtar, an outstanding exponent of dadra, thumri and ghazal semi classical music forms.
Begum Akhtar earned her mastery of these complex Hindustani classical music forms against a backdrop of a patriarchal society using her astounding talent, never once compromising on her dignity.
At the helm of this pioneering production is the extremely gifted Vidushi Chandra Chakraborty who will need no introduction to those familiar with the Indian classical music scene in Western Europe and elsewhere. Chandra will be accompanied by none other than renowned tabla maestro Pandit Sanju Sahai of the Benaras Gharana along with Saleel Tambe, Sunil Jadhav, Kathak exponent Jaymini Sahai and others.
Chandra and her team of brilliant performers promise to light up the Bhavan with their amazing talents this coming March.
This is not one to be missed!
