"The Jap Box" by David Hirata at the Fog City Magic Fest
Inspired by the story of magician Namigoro Sumidagawa, who in 1866 became the first Japanese citizen to be issued a passport to visit the West, where one of his prize illusions was appropriated by American magicians in yellowface, and renamed, The Jap Box. The "Jap Box" is a unique look at Asian American history from the point of view of Japanese-American magician David Hirata. Part theatrical story, part magic show, "The Jap Box" explores illusions of race and identity through the magic of two cultures.
Hailed as a master of deceit by KRON 4 TV and an extraordinary delight by San Francisco Bay Times, David Hirata has amazed audiences throughout the Bay Area with theatrical magic creations at the Exploratorium, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Oakland Museum, and at many private events. Previous shows include "Kanji by Starlight" at the Marsh, and "American Wizards" at the California Magic Dinner Theater. "The Jap Box" premiered at the 2018 San Diego International Fringe Festival where it won the award for Outstanding World Premiere Production.
