The Flesh Hungry Dog Show
On Friday, Aug 1st , The Flesh Hungry Dog Show gaily continues its unorthodox mission to be the best live rock and variety show for queers and friends in Chicago.   After our brief summer recess in July, the Aug. 1st show returns with the explosive rock and roll form youve come to expect from us, featuring 3 of our favorite female-fronted bands, The Pussy Pirates, 8 Inch Betsy and Hot Lips Messiah.  Hosted by Chicago rock impresario Gary Airedale, the show will also feature Bag of Fun prize giveaways from The Pleasure Chest, groovy movies, and DJ Sky.

The Flesh Hungry Dog Show starts at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6th, 2008 at Jackhammer (773-743-5772), 6406 N. Clark St. in Chicago. Time Out Chicago magazine referred to The Flesh Hungry Dog Show as an uber-inclusive, alterna-queer, mini-rock extravaganza and possibly the most diverse scene in the city.  Cover Charge is $8.  Jackhammer is a 21+ venue.  Tickets are available at the door, or buy online at www.fleshhungrydog.com, or www.brownpapertickets.com.

The Pussy Pirates
If you can get past their name, The Pussy Pirates might just charm your socks off. They all play the part of the tough girl, with stay-the-hell-away hairdos and curled upper lips, but their punchy doomsday horn punk brims with love, spirit, and humor. The two lead singers growl and shout about demons, jailbait, a half-eaten nun--even when they coo it's full of shrapnel--and between lines they deliver ska-tinged stings and hyperventilating solos (one doubles on tenor sax, the other on alto and trumpet). Meanwhile spooky tendrils of surf guitar dart in and out of the choppy, hectic stomp of the rhythm section. It's rousing, painful, and over with quick, like a bar fight.'

The Pussy Pirates are impossible not to like when you see them. They're rugged and glistening, a whirlwind even in a small room. They've got the gleeful abandon of the Slits and the rock of the Bush Tetras. The Pussy Pirates shout and wrangle with their instruments like they're strange animals barely controlled. They're the sharp tang that cuts through the endless wash of mediocre bands in mediocre bars.

8 Inch Betsy
Small band. Big Sound. All Girls. Pant-Rockers!!  A nod to the best 80's punk, 8 INCH BETSY's musical influences derive from bands like The Pixies, Social D, The Dead Milkmen, and Strung Out, with dynamic vocal and musical pulses like the kind you expect from  PJ Harvey, The Gossip, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  8 Inch Betsy's sound is like a "yet-to-be-had" celebrity death match between Sarah Bettens, and Jason Cruz and Bianca Butthole. This band was voted editor's pick by Curve Mag 9/'06, toured with Amy Ray and has played many notorious festivals such as HAAG, Indy Indie, Estrojam, and Ladyfest.

Hot Lips Messiah
With fists in the air and legs akimbo, the drunk, cursing, costumed misfits of Hot Lips Messiah are clearly Chicago's punk-rock saviors, here to invigorate the spirit and deliver us from sin. The sloppy, snarly, old-school quintet delivers an anarchic gospel of catchy, two-minute anthems whose almost-pretty keyboard melodies and damaging guitar riffs' inhuman speed whip lead vocalist Traci Trouble's defiant shrieking into a genuine frenzy.
