One of the things I love about quilting is combining colors for spectacular effects. We all know that the same color will look and act differently when it is combined with different colors. Most of what I know about color has come from trying different combinations of colors and patterns. Lately, Ive been interested in black and white and gray. Designing and piecing in these tones removes some of the variables of working with color and places the emphasis on shade and contrast.
In this workshop we will explore the power of working with neutral colors and patterns in piecing quilt designs. We will do a few exercises in the morning to experiment with the gray scale fabrics, placing different shades in contrast with one another.
In the afternoon we will branch out into some colors and play around with finding the grayscale equivalents of some of the colors. We will see how good we can get at matching them up and then execute some designs with the colors and their grayscale partners.
What to bring:
You will need your sewing machine, in good working order, and basic sewing supplies including thread, spare needles, rotary cutter and small mat, if you have one.
I will provide cutting and pressing stations for all students.
Each student will have half of a six foot table for a workspace, so dont overpack.
For fabric, bring some solids in favorite colors, some grays and black and whites in solids and prints if you have them. I will provide some solids in various neutral tones as well as colors to round out your supplies for the exercises.
This is the first version of the class that I am teaching. Some of the techniques and exercises are experimental in nature. Thanks for participating and helping me develop the best class possible.
