Experience the art, people, and phenomenon.
In Calgary on Friday & in Edmonton on Sunday, Alberta will host a unique film festival which exposes audiences to the art, people and phenomenon known as Burning Man.
Once a year, tens of thousands of participants gather for Burning Man in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever. In addition to the annual event, Burning Man is also an ever-expanding year-round culture based on a set of Ten Principles, and a source of creative inspiration for communities around the world.
The evening will include documentary short and feature films, introductions by local 'Burners', performances, and unique artworks.
*Back to the Burn, 2005 (27 mins) (Calgary & Edmonton) *By Sunny Minedew *Back to the Burn offers an overview of the many integral components required to bring Black Rock City back each year: community services, art cars, art installations, theme camps, and the Man Base. Exploring the significance of Burning Man's 2005 "Psyche" art theme, this films also offers a close look at the Temple of Dreams as artist David Best explains the significance of temples within community building.
*Voyage in Utopia, 2007 (83 mins) (Calgary & Edmonton) *By Laurent Le Gall *With a strong emphasis on founder Larry Harvey and temple artist David Best, this film about Burning Man 2003 expresses the scale and power of the Burning Man experience. Superb cinematography and editing are combined to make this is one of the most moving Burning Man videos ever produced.
*Beyond Black Rock, 2004 (110 mins) (Calgary only) *By Damon Brown *A behind-the-scenes look at Burning Man, this film explores the philosophy, the tireless efforts and people who drive it, and the transcendent experience which makes it a worldwide cultural force. Beyond Black Rock is the first documentary to fully chronicle the planning and preparation required to conduct the Burning Man festival on an annual basis, and how this commitment serves as a binding force for a worldwide, year-round community.
These films are provided by the filmmakers and the Burning Man Project to allow local exposure of the Burning Man experience, and to support fundraising opportunities by participants in their own cities.
Experience it for yourself at Alberta's Burning Man Film Festival in Calgary on Friday, May 24th at the Globe Cinema, and in Edmonton's Metro Cinema at the Garneau on Sunday, May 26th.
