Baldwin School 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Baldwin's High School Maskers Club presents the improvisational musical one-act comedy about coming of age and competition: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! The play will run for three performances November 9 at 7 p.m. and 10th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the Baldwin Campus in the Simpson Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students.

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. Audience interaction and improvisation is also employed for a unique and individual performance with every show!

In a high school gym, long time spelling bee hostess, Rona Lisa Peretti (played by senior Ashley Tate), finalizes the preparations for the annual county spelling bee, reminiscing about her own spelling bee victory, many years prior. As she shares her joy for spelling, she introduces this years contenders.

The contestants include last year's winner, Chip, a boy scout (played by Aiden Curry of the Haverford High School), Schwarzy, the youngest and most politically aware contestant (played by Baldwin freshman Skylar Ortiz), Leaf Coneybear, the somewhat wide-eyed offspring of hippie parents (played by homeschooler Sam Cappel), Barfee, an allergy-plagued student (played by Baldwin Junior, Jattu Fahnbulleh), Marcy, an over-achiever (played by sophomore, Lily Altman), and Olive, a tentative newcomer (played by sophomore Layla Siahatgar).

Once Vice Principal Panch (played by Baldwin Junior Abby Shen) arrives to assign the words to the competitors, the rules are read and guest spellers are invited to join the cast on stage. Theres also Mitch (played by freshman Caroline Lingle), who happens to be working off his community service hours as a comfort counselor for the kids.

Other students included in the production are Lucy Bonin, David Zachai DiSimone, Megan Mahone, Esther Moola, Blanche Jiang, Miles Hyatt-Long, Talia Viroslav, and Taylor Levinson. Students on stage crew include Destiny Brown (stage manager), Carys Li (choreographer), Estella Stein (assistant director), Alyssa Morales (Set Design), Andrea (Costume Design) Coler, Elizabeth Delaney, Sanae Hagino, Rebecca McCurdy, Milan Thorton, Caroline Prendergast, Becky Resnick, and Amy Erskine.

Mixing improvisation with an invitation for some members of the audience to come up and spell along with the cast, the musical show is always unique. Who the special guests will be, we don't know. Its different every show!

Even if you're not the type for volunteering and getting up on stage, the show will have an abundance of witty jokes and clever story-telling for your enjoyment!

(The Maskers advise parents to consider that the play deals with some mature subject matter involving youth development and puberty, some strong language is also used for dramatic effect. A small warning.)
