William Way LGBT Community Center presents the AIDS Quilt Songbook on May 11, 2013 in the Mark Segal Ballroom.

Originally performed at Lincoln Center in 1992, the AIDS Quilt Songbook is the Classical Music world's response to the AIDS crisis. In the words of the late baritone William Parker, who conceived of the project, "for singers, we are being pretty unvocal about AIDS." The Songbook has been performed and modified many times over the past two decades and, like the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the Songbook is an ever-changing work, with new pieces and new meaning being added with every production.

This very special rendition includes poetry readings from Sonia Sanchez, the first Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, and Jamarr Hall and Victor Jackson of the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement. The production also features 6 songs making their world premiere.

VIP ticketholders have the rare opportunity to mingle with the composers and singers in a post-show reception at the soon-to-open Pennsylvania 6 (114 South 12th Street); includes open beer and wine bar and hors d'oeuvres.

Co-curated by Gordon Beeferman and Thomas Bagwell, this production of the AIDS Quilt Songbook features 6 new works from composers based out of Philadelphia and New York City:
Andrea Clearfield
Benjamin C.S. Boyle
Michael Djupstrom
Joseph Hallman
Martin Hennessy (NYC)
Gordon Beeferman (NYC)

The performers are:
Elizabeth Weigle, soprano
Melissa Attebury, mezzo-soprano
Michael Slattery, tenor
Randall Scarlata, baritone
Joe Damon Chappel, bass
Thomas Bagwell, piano
Tim Ribchester, piano

Proceeds benefit William Way's LGBT Peer Counseling program, a free service available Monday through Friday, 6pm-9pm at 1315 Spruce Street or 215.732.8255.

The program is approximately 90 minutes.

Supported by Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Music Project.
